Quick Vocaloid Resources!

Quick bits of useful information about Vocaloids you may want to buy or use!

Optimum Tempo/Pitch Charts
Recommended Genres and XSY Groups

This is the basic info for every Vocaloid voicebank ever commercially released, listed (mostly) in order of release. It includes language, gender, optimum range/tempo, recommended genres, estimated price, and sometimes, information that might be useful when looking to purchase and/or use the Vocaloid. None of these should be taken as 100% comprehensive summaries and I encourage doing your own research on Vocaloids you want to buy if your questions aren't answered by these.

  • Optimum range/tempo and recommended genres are listed as given by official sources unless indicated otherwise. (In other words, no, I don't know what "ethno pop" means, I'm just relaying information here.)
  • Most prices are listed on the company's digital storefront. If they do not offer a price in USD, the native currency is used (e.g. yen for Japanese Vocaloids, won for Korean Vocaloids). Otherwise, prices are from the English Vocaloid Shop. The actual price may differ depending on currency conversion, tax, and where you buy the Vocaloid from.
  • Images used are usually from images of the Vocaloid boxes as given on the Vocaloid Wiki (this is why they vary a bit in resolution), the main exceptions being RUBY (has a box, but it's very low quality), DEX/DAINA (have no boxes, the boxes on the Zero-G storefront are fanmade) and CYBER SONGMAN (has no box).

VOCALOID1

LEON
LOLA
MIRIAM
MEIKO
KAITO

VOCALOID1 is no longer supported, and the original 3 English voicebanks (LEON, LOLA, MIRIAM) are no longer officially sold. MEIKO and KAITO are still available for purchase from Sonicwire, but there may be limited stock.
Each voicebank includes the editor; the editor does not need to be bought separately. It does not have a Japanese interface, only an English interface (even if using a Japanese voicebank).

The VOCALOID2 editor's interface depends on the previous voicebank installed. It will be Japanese if the last Vocaloid installed was Japanese, and English if it was an English Vocaloid. This isn't as much of an issue since VOCALOID2 voicebanks can be used in the VOCALOID3 editor (and VOCALOID4 with an import code), which does not have this issue. Some VOCALOID2 voicebanks will also include the VOCALOID2 editor.

The VOCALOID5 standard voicebanks (Amy, Chris, Kaori and Ken) come free with the editor but are installed separately. They are also available as free voicebanks for VOCALOID6, though they do not receive AI capabilities.

All VOCALOID6 voicebanks use VOCALOID:AI technology, which includes cross-lingual synthesis allowing any AI voicebank to sing in English, Japanese or Chinese (Mandarin). Each voicebank also has a trial that lasts 30 days. Like the VOCALOID5 standard voicebanks, the VOCALOID6 standard voicebanks (HARUKA, AKITO, SARAH and ALLEN) come free with the editor but are installed separately.
Cross-synthesis is still unavailable in VOCALOID6, but the XSyn plugin included with Internet Co. V6 voicebanks allows similar effects.

Optimum Tempo Chart

This was the best I could do to make a chart of everyone's optimum tempo as given by their distributors. I'm sorry that I couldn't make a higher res image. If this image is too hard to see, you can try the website Vocaloid Stats, though be aware that, as of writing, it hasn't been updated since the release of Xin Hua Japanese.

Optimum Range Chart

This is a chart of everyone's optimum range as given by their distributors. I was able to convert this to an HTML file, but I don't think there's a simple way to display it that way here, so you'll have to click the link below to view it.

The image provided is the chart converted to PDF and then a PNG, so while it's mostly readable, it's low quality. It's still provided in case you find it useful. If you don't like either option, like with optimum tempo, you can use Vocaloid Stats, but as stated, it hasn't been updated since the release of Xin Hua Japanese.

Click here to view the chart as a scrollable webpage! (better viewed on desktop)

(sorry about all the blank space! i'll try to find a way to fill it up...)

Recommended Genres

These are the genres recommended for certain voicebanks, usually given by their distributors.

Things to keep in mind:

  • This does not include any genres for which only one voicebank has been officially recommended for (e.g. New Age, bossa nova)
  • The lists in the colored boxes are in alphabetical order.
  • These are only official recommendations. Many of these voicebanks are flexible and can be used for many other genres. This is simply to be used as a loose guideline when choosing a vocalist for your song.

XSY Groups

These are the vocals that can be used with the cross-synthesis function. They are organized by voicebank, then XSY group, then company. It is possible to hack/mod Vocaloids to be able to use XSY outside their groups, but this is not recommended and is against the EULA.

(This image was made before Otomachi Una V6 was announced. The XSyn plugin is included with her voicebank as well as GUMI AI.)
